DAVID LIU of the Broad Institute and Harvard University has developed a CRISPR 2.0 approach called base editing. The technology allows researchers to swap out single “letters” of DNA in the genome, providing a more precise method of editing genes than classical CRISPR-Cas9. This year, Liu co-founded Beam Therapeutics to turn base editing into human medicines, particularly for diseases caused by single-letter genetic mutations.
