2. Encyclopaedia Britannica I used to own a gorgeous leatherbound edition of the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica worth several thousand dollars (Britannica sent me the set in lieu of payment for a medical article I once wrote). Eventually I sold the set and replaced it with a digital version contained on several CD-ROMs, and then with another version that fit on a single DVD-ROM. Now the whole Britannica is available as an app. Several hundred top articles are available free, and a subscription to the full database costs $1.99 per month. Britannica may not be as comprehensive as Wikipedia, but it’s a heck of a lot better written.
