Sounds like it is time to call our legislators and plead for them to free-up resources and "undo the binding legislation (the hiring freeze) that inhibits the university from hiring/traveling" to ensure that you keep/add researchers and support grant-writing at this critical time.

Great points Linden!! Research institutions help drive innovation through the discoveries they make. The long term effects of these cuts will be felt not only in the near term as you have pointed out, but years from now as well. Reduction of admissions will cause more young americans looking to FIND a job and not in positions to CREATE more jobs. Also, without allowances to reinforce sustainable laboratory resources (from both the restrictions on the one time challenge grant and reduction of state funds) how will any of these new scientific initiatives be maintained in past the two year spending deadline?
