Zynga Gets a Newtoy

San Francisco-based social game giant Zynga said today that it has acquired Newtoy, a McKinney, TX, game startup best known for a Scrabble-like multiplayer game for the Apple iPhone called Words With Friends. The company’s first game was a multiplayer version of chess called Chess with Friends. Zynga said in a statement that Newtoy will remain in Texas and “will become The Zynga With Friends Studio, a new game studio that leverages the popular franchise and builds new games for the Zynga network.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
