Metaplace Pulling Plug on Website

Bruce V. Bigelow12/22/09

San Diego-based Metaplace co-founder Ralph Koster announced on his blog today that the venture-backed company is shutting down Metaplace.com, its user-generated content website, effective Jan. 1. Koster, the former chief creative officer at Sony Online, says the Metaplace website, which offers users an online marketplace and platform for building their own social networking rooms “just hasn’t gotten traction.” Koster says the company itself isn’t going away, but he provides no details. The Metaplace website identifies its investors as Waltham, MA-based Charles River Ventures, Palo Alto, CA-based Cresendo Ventures, Marc Andreessen, and Ben Horowitz.
