Trove — This app from the Washington Post Company is…unusual. I’ve never seen such an odd mix of navigation and personalization strategies in a single app, along with a fair amount of gratuitious animation. Pros: With WaPo behind it, the app offers access to a wide range of news sources–3,000 altogether, according to the app’s description in the iTunes app store. Cons: I’m completely mystified by Trove’s “article picker” interface. And when you select an article, Trove usually takes you to the full Web version, with all the attendant ads and other clutter, which defeats the point of using a news reader. Overall I have to agree with a customer reviewer: “Love the concept but poor execution.”
