World Atlas HD — National Geographic Society, $1.99 — While the iPad’s built-in Google Maps app will get you where you want to go, World Atlas HD provides all of the aesthetic pleasures of the beautiful maps that the National Geographic Society distributes with its print magazine. This app lets you browse those maps in three styles: executive (read: pretty), political (with more labels), and satellite. There’s also basic reference information on all the world’s countries. It’s the iPad equivalent of the old classroom globe.
