We dropped cable as well about 6 months ago. We've been pretty happy with Apple TV, and Roku/Netflix as alternatives.

The fund I'm associated with, New Atlantic Ventures, has backed TVU Networks, which allows live, real-time viewing of 100s of TV stations from around the world. Its worth checking out if you are exploring this area. Also worth trying out is Boxee, which local VC Spark Capital has invested in.

But there are definitely gaps. When the inaugural concert on the Washington Mall was broadcast, HBO had the contract, and released it only through cable (they made it free for non-HBO subscribers on cable, but you still had to have cable). After the fact you could download it from the HBO site, but it was not in high-def, and there was no easy way to get it to the living-room without going through a complicated process of converting the downloaded HBO video and uploading it to iTunes.
