Monotype Buys Planetweb

Woburn, MA-based Monotype Imaging (NASDAQ: TYPE) has paid $1.9 million in cash to acquire the assets of Planetweb, a dot-com-era holdover based in Redwood Shores, CA, according to a Monotype announcement today. Founded in 1996, Planetweb had raised nearly $60 million in venture backing to develop Internet browsers for televisions and other devices; its current lead product is SpectraWorks, a graphical user interface embedded in digital cameras, cable set-top boxes, and DVD players. Monotype says it plans to build its font and layout engines into the SpectraWorks user interface.
