VMware Drinks Up SpringSource

Wade Roush8/11/09

VMware (NYSE: VMW), the Palo Alto, CA-based virtualization subsidiary of Hopkinton, MA-based information management giant EMC (NYSE: EMC), said yesterday that it has agreed to acquire SpringSource for $420 million in cash and stock. The San Mateo company makes tools used by developers to write Java software. The deal, VMware’s largest acquisition to date, has some analysts scratching their heads, but VMware said it makes sense because SpringSource’s tools will help VMware customers build software that runs in virtualized internal or cloud computing environments.
