It is going to be a while for this to happen. 2020 is too long for change we change to happen now so that everything wont go to hell. They need to fix that problem and help out the brake pads to become better as well.

The pluses: not only do clean diesels offer much cleaner emissions with fuel saving chips, particulate matter (soot) is reduced 95 percent or more (over standard diesels), and there's also a substantial reduction in oxides of nitrogen and sulfur.

I think that working on expanding technologies like clean diesel looking all other new technologies are a great direction that this new legislation can take us. Your title for the post is good also - noting that its one way to meet the new CAFE standards and as long as we keep acknowledging that there may be multiple solutions. I've done some work with the AAM and establishing these new standards that we all agree on is a good first step and I think its also good that the manufacturers are working together on this too.
