Catharine, good to hear from you! You ask an important question about the dynamics between the public and private sectors that I didn't address in the article above. Often, when there are major changes to a market, the public sector intervenes to attempt to change the distribution of goods or services to pursue public policy goals.

While I don't know about the exact credit that Donna was referring to, there are at least three US states that currently are offering tax credits as way to encourage angel investing: Hawaii, Wisconsin and Ohio. There are various rules around each, including that companies must register with the state to be eligible, differing levels of deductibility and, in Hawaii's case, the ability to trade tax credits. There is also legislation proposed in the US House of Representatives for a partial national tax credit to encourage angel investing. There are some interesting issues around how such credits affect investment and the companies seeking them, but these are examples of yet more changes in the venture investing market and how the public sector already is intervening to stimulate the private markets where there is a belief that there is too little capital available for economic growth.

Hi James, Long time no speak! I’ve been intending to contact you and then found you on this blog…so thought I’d write you here. I’d love to catch up but I have a quick question for you ..and would be so grateful if you could help! I am still raising angel funds for my company and recently found out that investors could get a 100% deduction on their first $100,000 investment in an early stage company. My question is…where can I find out more information about this income tax deduction so that I can provide the information (and thus the deduction) to my investors… I’ve never known about this deduction but attended an event last friday hosted by the Center for Women & Entrepreneurship and that’s where I learned about it. Thanks again and Happy Holidays!

Hello James,

Interesting article. I am trying to build an Entrepreneurs Investors community. Our idea is to bring to entrepreneurs advice that will help t hem in the growth process (without crawling and begging for help). They can post their needs. Most entrepreneurs are too isolated and just don’t know what to do. They also do not have all the financial resources to ask for advice. We will be honored if you can participate to our community.

I leave you the decision to publish the address of the website (thestreetmarket.com).

Thanks and good work!
