This August, John Abele and his brothers, Bruce and Brad, located their father’s submarine, the USS Grunion, which had been lost in the Aleutians during World War II. Abele gave a stirring account of the years-long effort and how it came to fruition, packed with underwater images and film from a Today show segment. In the background is the armed Japanese cargo ship that sunk the Grunion after two of the U.S. sub’s torpedoes bounced off her, leaving a trail in the water pointing directly to the Grunion’s location.
