hi Wade,
Great article. And you cracked me up with the story of your sleeping avatar. Thanks for not taking yourself too seriously!

The other side of these lectures is when the speaker wanders off the podium and starts climbing over the participants. I saw one where the guy started flying around and jumping off rocks, while talking in the same monotone, which is also pretty weird.

I missed your speech and I'm not familiar with what you have said before about mixing Google Earth and Second Life - but for me it is the extension of a failed metaphor, and I shall explain (briefly) why:

Geocoordinates only seem to matter within a single simulator. Most people teleport around. Sim boundary issues continue to make Second Life cross sim travel a bit of a problem, and I don't think that problem will go away simply because of the underlying structure. It looks like land. It is even in court for being advertised as land one can own. It still is only 3d web hosting.

Immediate proximity may be important for specific things, such as business or community - but a click of a button, and I travel through a bunch of pipes filled with electrons and dumped without undue ceremony at my destination. Where do I need Google Maps?

I was inspired by your enthusiasm at the Dr. Dobbs Life 2.0 keynote speech in Second Life. I am glad you kept the conversation going about mashing up Google Earth and Second Life.
I didn't interpret your avatar's "away" mode as a sign of disengagement. Instead, it meant that you were concentrating on your comments, the audience, and their questions. And that's a good thing!

Sounds like a great presentation. There was a similar SL lecture given at my office where the Keynote's avatar showed up naked and paralyzed. I hope the Metaverse includes an "Undo" option.
